What is the Inclusive Access Program?

ASU's Inclusive Access program is designed to deliver digital materials to students at the lowest possible price. The Bookstore works with publishers to secure discounted pricing on digital titles, which are then integrated into Canvas. All students have access to the materials starting approximately 5 days prior to the start of classes. A few days after the add/drop period closes (exact date announced each term), any student who hasn't actively opted out of the program pays for the material at the discounted price via a charge that posts directly to their student account. Inclusive Access programs are becoming a standard across higher education. Participating institutions have recorded statistically significant increases in student performance and retention. ASU currently has close to 5000 sections participating across all campuses, impacting over 100,000 students per semester.

How are materials delivered?

Delivery varies depending on the publisher. Adaptive learning programs such as McGraw's Connect, Cengage's MindTap and Wiley's WileyPlus, are delivered through the publisher's learning tool on Canvas. The publisher removes the paywall, and students click into the material without being prompted for payment. Standard e-books are delivered as e-books through the ASU Bookstore tool on Canvas. Students access materials via single sign-on. Pearson Revel and MyLab codes are also delivered through the ASU Bookstore tool, but the code generated within the tool must be redeemed through the Access Pearson link in Canvas. If using a MyLab or Revel title from Pearson, be sure to activate both the ASU Bookstore and Access Pearson tools.

How do students access Pearson MyLab and Revel content?

The professor will enable the ASU Bookstore and Access Pearson tools in Canvas. Students click on the ASU Bookstore tool, where they'll see the MyLab or Revel title on their digital shelf. Clicking on this will reveal an access code. The student copies the access code, then clicks on the Access Pearson tool, where the MyLab title will be visible for the course. When prompted, the student pastes the access code to open access.

I’m having trouble accessing my e-book through the ASU Bookstore tool. What can I do?

Books can take between 24-48 hours to provision after adding the course, please allow sufficient time if you’ve recently added the course. You can also access most standard e-books directly through the Kortext portal by following these steps:

  1. Go to https://read.kortext.com
  2. In the email address box, enter your ASU email address EXACTLY as it appears in the directory (https://asu.edu/directory). Don’t assume: look yourself up.
  3. Click on “Forgot Password” and enter your email address again, then click “Send instructions.” You should receive a password reset link in your ASU inbox which will allow you to reset the password and then sign into Kortext directly.

What if my instructor doesn’t have the ASU Bookstore tool activated in Canvas?

Please go to https://student.follett.com and follow the prompts to access the site.

How do students opt out?

The opt out portal varies by campus and is generally open starting 5 days prior to the start of classes through the semester’s drop deadline:

I’m not receiving my password reset emails for the opt out portal.

  • Please be sure you’re not forwarding your ASU email to any external email address (including Gmail accounts). ASU’s Technology Office has discovered an issue where ASU emails are lost when forwarded. Remove any email forwarding rules before requesting password resets and check your ASU email directly. Also, be sure to enter the email “alias” on record in the Student Information System. To determine which alias is assigned to your name, look yourself up in the Directory (https://asu.edu/directory) and use your email EXACTLY as it appears there.
  • The reset email for the opt-out portal can sometimes take 24 hours to arrive.
  • Try to “create an account.” If the system tells you an account already exists, then try to reset the password.

Where can students turn for help?

Use https://forms.gle/uD4GhBxMoixnbwYx5 to contact our support desk ticketing system. Please reference your ticket # in any subsequent communication as well.

What happens when students add/drop the course?

Students who drop a course prior to the last day to withdraw without college approval are automatically removed from billing; students who add late are provisioned material, generally within 24-48 hours. If you withdraw after the semester’s 100% refund deadline, you are responsible for paying the fee. If the university has made an exception for extenuating circumstances (Medical/deployment, etc…), OR, if you withdrew before the 100% refund deadline, please submit a ticket with documentation: https://forms.gle/uD4GhBxMoixnbwYx5

Can I use my Pell Grant funds to cover the charge?

Not directly. The Pell Grant integration with the Bookstore ends approximately 2 weeks prior to the start of the semester. Charges for this program aren’t issued until approximately 2 weeks after the start of the semester, which allows students time to opt out (if desired), or to not be charged if they drop the class. However, with some planning, you can still reserve Pell funds to pay for the charge. Any unused Pell Grant funds will be disbursed to you shortly after the semester starts. If you know you have a future Inclusive Access charge of $100, and your Pell Grant is for $500, be sure to spend no more than $400. When the charge posts, you can use your Pell refund to cover the balance.

Does this work with my VA/Aramark/Starbucks funding?

  • VA: Please work with your case coordinator after the charges post as they'll know how to proceed.
  • Starbucks: course material fees are not covered.
  • Other programs: work with your counselor on what is and isn’t covered. Often, a screenshot of the charges on your student account can be used as proof of purchase.

When do charges post?

Charges typically post to your ASU student account approximately 2 weeks after the start of the semester under the description “Digital Integrated Course Mtrl.” You can view and pay this charge by logging into your MyASU and selecting the Finances link located at the top of the page. Please note that late fees will be assessed if left unpaid.

How do I activate the ASU Bookstore tool? (Professors Only)

  1. Access the Settings link in the course navigation menu
  2. Click the Navigation tab
  3. Drag the ASU Bookstore tool from the bottom block of options to the top.
  4. Click Save.

How does an instructor confirm they want to participate in the IA program?

If you’re new to the program, please fill out https://forms.gle/esyW5Qa97r8fhKwM6. You can also use the form to confirm that you’ll be moving forward with a previous semester’s adoptions or reach out to your Bookstore contact directly.

How can I ensure students have access to the e-book in the Respondus Lockdown Browser?

Please be sure to whitelist the following domains:

asu.follettdiscover.com

follettdiscover.com

brytewave.redshelf.com

aanvas.asu.edu

asu.instructure.com

read.kortext.com

read.na1.kortext.com

How do I know a course is participating in this program?

Information will generally be posted in class search (https://asu.edu/classes) prior to the first day of class. Check by:

  1. Clicking on the dropdown arrow next to the course to see course details.
  2. On the right, you’ll see a message indicating “Inclusive Access Program for Course Materials.”
  3. Click “View all details” to see required materials.
    1. Note: the price on this page doesn’t necessarily reflect the discounted price. Detailed information will often be included in your syllabus. Additionally, the Bookstore will send emails to your ASU email address starting the week prior to classes starting and continuing through the drop deadline with more detailed information about price, the process for accessing materials, and the opt out deadline and portal.

What if I need alternative formatting?

Submit a copy of the email you receive indicating that you’re enrolled in an Inclusive Access course to the SAILS office. This will identify the materials you need. SAILS will confirm with the Bookstore that you haven’t opted out and will use that information as proof of purchase.

I missed the opt out deadline. Can I still opt out?

No. After the opt-out deadline passes, ASU pays the publishers for the material being used. Changes are not permitted after the deadline.

There’s no opt-out button for my course.

Each campus has a unique opt-out portal. Be sure you’re clicking the correct one. I-courses can be assigned to any of the campuses, so it’s sometimes necessary to check each portal. Because some materials are mandated for participation in a course, the opt-out button isn’t always available. Your instructors should explain this in their syllabus. Examples of some courses that don’t allow opt outs are: any course using Dreamscape Learning, MyEducator, ASU Digit, MAT 210 Gap Notes and others.
