Information
When LockDown Browser is used with “Instructor Live Proctoring”, your instructor watches the class remotely during an online test. This feature requires the use of a video conference system such as Zoom or MS Teams and is intended for small classes where the instructor can view all students on the screen at once. You and your instructor will meet in the video conferencing application at a specified time. When the class is ready, the instructor will provide you with a start code for the online exam – you will then launch Lockdown Browser to begin the test. The instructor can then watch you via the video conference system for the duration of the exam. Note: Instructor Live Proctoring does NOT record the your video, nor does it alert the instructor to suspicious events. These features are only available with Respondus Monitor, the automated proctoring solution. Instead, your instructor will be watching you while you take the test

How to take a Live Proctored test
  1. Be sure to install the latest version of Respondus Lockdown Browser.
  2. Join the online meeting at the scheduled time using the link provided to you by the instructor. This will be located somewhere within your course (i.e. announcements, modules, etc.). If you cannot find this link, please reach out to your instructor.
  3. Once you and all of your classmates are in the meeting (or at the exam start time), the instructor will provide you with the exam start code. When you have this code, launch Respondus Lockdown Browser.
  4. Log in to your Canvas account, navigate to your test, and click "Take the Quiz".
  5. Enter the exam start code.

Frequently Asked Questions

What devices are supported?

The following versions of LockDown Browser support the Instructor Live Proctoring option: Windows and MacOS.

LockDown Browser for iPad doesn’t directly support this option (the iPad assessment mode doesn’t allow multiple apps to run simultaneously), but similar results can be achieved if a second device is used. If needed, your instructor may allow you to use the iPad for the video conferencing tool, and take the test on a second device, or vice versa.

Can I communicate with my instructor during the exam?

The video conferencing tool runs in the background through your exam. Your instructor will be able to hear you and respond audibly if you need to ask a question, but you will not be able to view the instructor or otherwise interact with the video conferencing tool. Once your test is complete and you click "Submit", Respondus will close and you will then be able to use the video conferencing tool to leave the meeting.

Why can't I open the meeting if I'm in Respondus?

Respondus will restrict your ability to open applications while it's running. You will need to close Respondus and launch the meeting. Once you are in your meeting and have received your start code, you may then launch Respondus Lockdown Browser and continue to the test.
