If you're reading this article, it's likely that one or more of your courses is using Honorlock to proctor exams. Honorlock is an online proctoring service that allows you to take your exam from the comfort of your home. You DO NOT need to create an account, download software, or schedule an appointment in advance. Honorlock is available 24/7, and all that is required is a computer, a working webcam/microphone, your ID, and a stable internet connection.
How do I install Honorlock?To get started, you will need to
install Google Chrome and download the
Honorlock Chrome Extension. Google Chrome is required to use Honorlock.
Honorlock Minimum System RequirementsHow do I begin my exam?When you are ready to begin your exam:
- Log in to Canvas.
- Go to your course.
- Click on your exam
- Click "Launch Proctoring" - this will begin the Honorlock authentication process. You will need to take a photo of yourself, show your ID, and complete a scan of your testing environment.
Honorlock will then begin recording your exam session through your webcam, microphone, and recording your screen. Honorlock also has an integrity algorithm that can detect search-engine use, so please do not attempt to search for answers, even if it's on a secondary device.

How do I take a 3rd Party Exam using Honorlock?
Third-Party exams, or Universal Exams, are assessments that are administered outside of Canvas. At ASU, there are several different third-party platforms that may be used to administer your exams. These include, but are not limited to, Pearson, ALEKS, McGraw Hill, WebAssign, WeBWorK, and Vocarium. Accessing these exams will be slightly different, since Honorlock is integrated with Canvas and not with the third-party service. What are the Identification Guidelines and Requirements?
ASU's identification requirements for exams will remain unchanged from previous semesters. You may use your ASU Sun Card, provided that the Sun Card is not a MidFirst Bank Sun Card containing the card numbers and expiration dates on the same side as your name and photo. MidFirst Bank began issuing Sun Cards with the card numbers on the back in 2020 and these cards are authorized for test identification. Passports, driver's licenses, and other state identification cards containing your full name and a photo are also permitted. United States Armed Forces ID cards and CAC cards continue to be prohibited forms of identification, as producing a photocopy of military IDs issued by any branch of the US Armed Forces is a federal offense under Title 18, U.S. Code Part I, Chapter 33, Section 701. Please be sure to reach out to your instructor if you do not have a proper form of identification so that they may advise you on how to move forward.

Understandably, privacy is a growing concern with online proctoring tools that utilize your camera to record you. Arizona State University takes your privacy very seriously and has put measures in place to safeguard against privacy threats. As with all tools used by ASU, Honorlock was subject to an in-depth security review process that identifies potential risks and, through mitigating controls, reduces the overall risk to ASU students, systems, and networks. Support for any questions, concerns, or issues that may come up while you use the proctoring service is provided by Honorlock and is available 24/7/365. If you are actively taking an exam, simply click the Live Chat bubble located in the lower right-hand corner of your screen.
