How Much Can My Parent Borrow If They Apply for a Parent PLUS Loan?

« Go Back
Information

As of 07/01/2026, the federal government will have updated borrowing limits for Parent PLUS loans. The limits are now $20,000 per year, with a lifetime limit of $65,000.

  • Students enrolled before July 1, 2026, with a prior disbursement of a subsidized, unsubsidized or Parent PLUS Loan are able to borrow under the legacy rules of the One Big Beautiful Bill act of 2025. Legacy borrowers can borrow up to the student’s cost of attendance minus other financial aid received. Students will remain under the legacy rules until they graduate or complete three years, whichever is less.
  • For new students enrolled after July 1, 2026, the Parent PLUS Loan has an annual cap of $20,000 and a lifetime cap of $65,000. Note that this cap can still be limited by your cost of attendance.
  • More information can be found at Parent PLUS Student Loans.
