I Have a Dependent Who is Not My Child. What Do I Have to Submit to Prove My Financial Support?

« Go Back
Information
Per federal regulations, you must be financially supporting a dependent more than 50 percent in order to be considered independent for financial aid purposes. Accepted forms of support include:
  • a copy of your signed Federal Tax Return for the FAFSA tax year showing you claimed a dependent
  • a lease agreement showing you as the sole tenant responsible for the rent and your dependent as an occupant (i.e., not responsible for the rent)
  • your medical insurance policy from your employer listing your dependent as a covered individual
  • proof of federal/state benefits that list you as the primary person receiving these benefits on behalf of your dependent(s)
If you have a dependent you support more than 50 percent, but do not have the three acceptable forms of financial support proof, you are encouraged to meet with a financial aid counselor to discuss your specific situation. You do not need an appointment to see a financial aid counselor. Contact Financial Aid and Scholarship Services to speak with a counselor or visit any campus office location.
