Preventing Conflict with My New Roommate

« Go Back
Information

Communication is one of the best ways to prevent conflict with a new roommate. Having conversations early about expectations can help avoid misunderstandings and create a more positive living experience. Shortly after moving in, set aside time to get to know each other and discuss your routines, preferences, and expectations. Remember that you and your roommate(s) will also complete a **Roommate Agreement**, which provides a structured opportunity to establish shared expectations for living together.

Consider discussing questions such as:

* What time do you usually go to bed and wake up?
* Do you prefer to study in a quiet environment, or are music and background noise okay?
* Can you sleep with the lights on, music playing, or the window open?
* How often do you expect to have guests, and what boundaries should be in place?
* How do you feel about overnight guests?
* How will you divide cleaning responsibilities and keep shared spaces organized?
* How do you prefer to communicate if an issue or concern comes up?

Remember that roommate relationships require flexibility, respect, and ongoing communication. If expectations change during the semester, revisit your Roommate Agreement and have another conversation. If you need additional support, your Community Assistant or Community Director can help facilitate a discussion and connect you with resources.
