Roommate Expectations

« Go Back
Information

Living with a roommate is often different from living with your family. When you live on campus, you'll share a space with someone who may have different backgrounds, routines, interests, and personal habits. While adjusting to a shared living environment can be challenging at times, it is also an opportunity to develop communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills that will benefit you throughout your college experience and future career.

Successful roommate relationships don't require you and your roommate to be best friends or have everything in common. Instead, they are built on mutual respect, realistic expectations, and a willingness to understand each other's perspectives. Embrace your differences and recognize that everyone brings unique experiences and preferences to the shared living environment.

It's normal for disagreements to arise from time to time. The keys to navigating roommate conflicts are **communication** and **compromise**. Address concerns early, listen to one another with respect, and work together to find solutions that meet both roommates' needs. When needed, your Community Assistant or Catalyst can help facilitate productive conversations.
