A VA education benefit chapter identifies the specific U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) education benefit program under which you receive benefits. Each benefit chapter has its own eligibility requirements, covered education expenses and program regulations.
Your benefit chapter determines the type of education benefits available to you and how those benefits are administered. The VA determines your eligibility for a specific benefit chapter.

Post-9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33)

The Post-9/11 GI Bill® provides education benefits to eligible individuals based on qualifying active-duty service after Sept. 10, 2001. Depending on your eligibility, benefits may include:

Montgomery GI Bill® – Active Duty (Chapter 30)
Chapter 30 provides education benefits to eligible Veterans who served on active duty and meet the program's eligibility requirements.

Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) (Chapter 31)

Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) helps eligible Veterans with service-connected disabilities prepare for, obtain and maintain suitable employment. Depending on your approved rehabilitation plan, services may include education, training and vocational rehabilitation support.
Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance (DEA) (Chapter 35)

Chapter 35 provides education and training benefits to eligible spouses and dependents of certain Veterans.
Montgomery GI Bill® – Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606)

Determining your benefit chapter
Only the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) determines which education benefit chapter you qualify for. Your assigned benefit chapter appears on your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) and is used by your school when certifying your enrollment for VA education benefits.
