What documentation do I submit for my emancipated minor status?

Information
If a court in your home state determined that you are or were an emancipated minor (i.e., released from the control of your parent or guardian) before you reached the age of being an adult in your home state (i.e., generally 18 years old), you are independent for financial aid purposes. If documentation is requested on your Priority Tasks on My ASU, upload a copy of your emancipated minor court documents.

*While the basis for emancipation can vary by state, the emancipation must be determined by a court, not by an attorney.

If you selected this status in error, upload a signed statement indicating an error was made. If this is the only status that is making you independent for FAFSA purposes, you must correct your FAFSA and include parent information and FSA ID signature.
