What documentation do I submit for my orphan status?

« Go Back
Information
If both parents were deceased when you were 13 or older, you are independent even if you were subsequently adopted. If documentation is requested on your Priority Tasks on My ASU, upload one of the following for each parent:
  • parent death certificates*
  • obituary
  • only if the above two options are unavailable, signed and notarized letters from family members stating the full names and dates of death for each parent
*If one parent is deceased and the other parent’s whereabouts are unknown, you will need to provide the death certificate of the deceased parent and a signed detailed letter of explanation for the other parent.

If you selected this status in error, upload a signed statement indicating an error was made. If this is the only status that is making you independent for FAFSA purposes, you must correct your FAFSA and include parent information and FSA ID signature.
