Like many nursing programs, Arizona State University has limited space within its nursing program. You can move into the upper division program through one of two designated pathways. One of these pathways is called
Direct Admission. If you are a first-time freshmen, you can be awarded direct admission based on your high school GPA or class rank, and performance on the SAT or ACT. The criteria for direct admission is outlined on ASU's
undergraduate application. Earning direct admission status means that you are guaranteed placement in the upper division clinical nursing program as long as you meet the minimum criteria during your first two years at ASU.
As a direct admit student, you must meet the following requirements:
- Full time and continuous enrollment in accordance with the program major map
- Maintain a 3.50 minimum semester ASU GPA in every semester
- Maintain a 3.50 minimum critical course GPA each semester
- Have completed 13 of 17 prerequisite course no later than the end of the 3rd term with a 3.75 GPA and completion of the remaining four or fewer prerequisites in term four
- Successful completion of all non-academic requirements and screening items
- Grades of “C” or better in prerequisite courses
After successful completion of the requirements above, direct admit students are advanced to the upper division clinical nursing program without entering the competitive application process. Because of this, it is only after the direct admission students procure their reserved clinical spots that competitive applicants are awarded any remaining clinical seats. In past cycles, about half of the clinical upper division seats have been taken by direct admission students and the other half by competitive applicants.
Direct admission students are classified as BSN Nursing majors. Students within the competitive application process are not classified as nursing majors. Most often, competitive applicants are classified as BS Community Health or BS Integrative Health majors.
