Google Scholar primarily consists of scholarly journal articles and books, although other types of publications such as book reviews, conference proceedings, patents, technical reports, and citations from reference lists may also appear.

Coverage of the literature is inconsistent, as not all material is available online, and some publishers may limit what Google Scholar can access.
