An online success coach is a retention-focused member of the academic support team who helps students stay continuously enrolled. Every online degree-seeking student is assigned a success coach upon registering for their first credit bearing course. These students have their coaches until they graduate.
How can a success coach benefit me as a student?Success coaches are relationship builders. They focus on addressing student needs every step of the way, from time management, organization, resource review, and tutoring. Success coaches assist students in overcoming obstacles and by connecting them to relevant ASU departments, such as finance, advising, and the Disability Resource Center. Success coaches do not advise. Rather, they ask questions to allow for independent thinking around plans for success in classes and encourage self-reflection about resources or strategies that have worked or haven't worked in the past.
How is an online success coach different from support staff in other departments?Success coaches do not recommend or schedule classes. They can help identify tools to view progress but will always recommend speaking to an academic advisor if course registration questions need to be answered. To add, they don't process withdrawal requests or recommend options that may impact scheduling. If questions arise about finance, a success coach will assist with getting in touch with that department but will not answer questions about an account directly. It's also good to know that online success coaching is different than first year success coaching, which is immersion based. For more information about first year success coaching, please visit
