The federal government requires schools to verify the income reported on the
FAFSA for some financial aid recipients. The verification process ensures that you receive all the financial aid for which you are eligible. You are only required to submit tax information when a Financing Task is posted on
My ASU. Below are options to fulfill this requirement.
1. Make a correction to your FAFSA by using the
IRS Data Retrieval Tool and do not change any of the imported data. Instructions for this process can be found in the
How Do I Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool? article. ASU will receive your FAFSA correction in three to five days.
2. Submit a signed copy of your tax return
or request a
Tax Return Transcript from the IRS. Find the different methods in the
How do I request a transcript using My ASU? article. Once received, upload a copy.
3. If you did not file and were not required to file taxes, request a
Verification of Nonfiling Letter from the IRS. Find the different methods in the
How do I request a Verification of Nonfiling Letter from the IRS? article. Once received, upload the VONF Letter along with copies of all your and your spouse's (if married) W-2s.
The federal government publishes guidelines each year with
tax filing requirements. All federal aid recipients are expected to comply with published tax laws. Any conflicting information will need to be resolved before a financial aid award can be posted.
