Why Isn't the Border Filter Blocking the Spam in My Junk Email Folder?

Functional GroupTechnical Resources: Email
Information
The border filter blocks millions of spam messages every day from being delivered into ASU's email system. Its job is to clear only the high probability spam. All settings on this border system, and the methods that are used to block email, are set globally. They do not provide any per user settings. To avoid false positives as often as possible, the border filter will need to let some spam through, that spam will arrive in your Junk email folder or your Gmail for ASU Spam folder respectively.

Additional Information:
  • The techniques used to determine the likelihood of a mail item being spam are not entirely content based. That is to say, the words in the message alone will not cause the message to be blocked at this border filter. They will add to the overall score of the message, but the sending server IP's and coding behind the message will score the message much higher than content alone. With ASU being such a research driven community, it is important that we use these techniques rather than relying on the text inside the email, as that method could cause a false positive.
  • Spam that is passed through the border and into your Junk email or spam folder may look similar in subject line and message text, but the sending IP and code of the message combined with that text did not score high enough to be blocked at the border. We rely on the filtering capabilities of Gmail for ASU to keep that spam out of your Inbox, and in your quarantine folders.
