Your parent may not be eligible for a Parent PLUS Loan if one of the following scenarios apply:
- Your parent is not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- The only income your parent receives is Social Security or Social Security Disability payments.
- Your parent filed for bankruptcy and can provide letter from bankruptcy court stating that as a condition of the bankruptcy filing, they may not incur additional debt.
- Note: Applying for bankruptcy does not qualify as an exceptional circumstance unless you meet the above condition.
If one of these scenarios applies, you may submit a
Parent PLUS Loan Special Circumstance Request and your parent can then complete and submit the Parent PLUS Loan Special Circumstance Form in order to determine eligibility for additional student Direct Unsubsidized Loan funds. They will find the form in their My ASU Finance Tasks when they log in using their guest access.
Please note: Submission of this form does not guarantee additional student Direct Unsubsidized Loan funds. Please remember to attach supporting documentation to the form. Your parent's refusal to take out a Parent PLUS Loan is not considered a special circumstance.
