The ASU network utilizes advanced network technology to ensure ASU Students, Faculty and Staff have access to fast, reliable Wi-Fi. The University Technology Office (UTO) in conjunction with University Housing are asking for your help with something that has become a major issue that is negatively affecting the performance of the ASU Wi-Fi on campus.
Do you have your own printer? Have you attempted to connect it to the ASU Wi-Fi only to find that it will not connect successfully? It is important to understand that your printer will not work if you are attempting to connect to the ASU Wi-Fi using the printer's built-in wireless function. Your printer is designed to connect to a small network, typically provided by a wireless router in an apartment or house. Because the ASU network is a domain-based enterprise scale network, it utilizes different security and permission models and protocols than your typical home network. Your printer will work when connected directly to your computer using either an Ethernet or USB printer cable.
You also may not know that having your printer’s Wi-Fi turned on (which it is by default) has a significant impact on the performance of the ASU wireless network, both in your room and other rooms nearby. The built-in Wi-Fi in your printer continually broadcasts a signal (unless turned off), that interferes with the ASU Wi-Fi.
We know what you may be thinking, how can just one wireless printer broadcasting its signal have a significant negative impact on the ASU network? The hundreds of printers that have built-in Wi-Fi all broadcasting simultaneously over the ASU network creates a large amount of additional network traffic.
How can you help to improve the performance of the ASU Network?
We are asking you to turn off the built-in wireless in your printer to remove the excess network traffic it is generating on the ASU network. This will not affect the operation of your printer in any way when it is connected to your computer via a cable.
The instructions below detail how to turn the built-in wireless off on the most common printers used on the ASU Campus. You can also use Google or go to the printer manufacturer website (links below) to get instructions for your specific model.

For newer models with a control panel:
On the printer control panel, go to Setup > Network > Wireless Radio on/off. Turn the wireless off.
NOTE: Some models will have a BLUE wireless light that can be pressed to turn off the wireless.

For most EPSON models - How to turn off the built-in wireless:
- Press the Setup button on the control panel of the printer.
- Select Wi-Fi/Network Settings.
- Select Wi-Fi Setup.
- Select Wi-Fi Setup Wizard.
- Select Disable Wi-Fi.

For most Canon models - How to turn off the built-in wireless:
Press and hold the RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer and then release the button after the POWER lamp flashes 12 times. The Wi-Fi lamp goes off, and the wireless is now disabled.
To re-enable the wireless connection, press and hold the RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer, then release the button when the POWER lamp flashes ten times.

- On the control panel of the printer, press Menu.
- Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Network and press OK.
- Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Wired LAN or WLAN (depending on model) and press OK.
- Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Wired Enable or WLAN Enable (depending on model) and press OK.
