Participating in Yellowdig

Yellowdig is designed to help you interact with your classmates and course content through conversations rather than a traditional discussion-board format. Depending on how your instructor has configured your community, you may participate by creating posts, commenting on other posts, reacting to content, or completing other activities.

Getting Started

YellowDig has an online Orientation guide to help students set up their profiles and notifications.

Create Posts and Comments

To create a new post, open your Yellowdig community and select Create. Posts can include more than text—you can add links, images, videos, files, polls, audio or video recordings, formulas, and other content. Your instructor may also use Topics to organize conversations. If points are enabled, some Topics may be eligible for points while others are not.

Mentions, Hashtags, and Reactions

Use @mentions to bring another community member into a conversation. Mentions can notify the person that you've referenced them.

#Hashtags can help organize related conversations and make content easier to filter. Unlike Topics, which are managed by instructors, hashtags can be created by community members.

You can also use Reactions to acknowledge posts and comments. Depending on your course settings, receiving reactions may contribute to your Yellowdig points.

Grading: Points and Participation

If your instructor has enabled Yellowdig grading, your participation may earn Yellowdig points. The activities that earn points and the number of points available depend on how your instructor has configured the community.

Select Show Details below your points display in Yellowdig to review:

  • How you've earned your points
  • Your participation activity
  • Your course's earning rules
  • Your progress toward participation goals
  • Point or grade adjustments

Yellowdig recommends using Show Details to understand your progress in the course rather than relying solely on the Canvas Gradebook.

Your Yellowdig point total and the points displayed in Canvas may not match. Yellowdig converts your participation into a percentage, which is then sent to your Canvas course gradebook.

Grade synchronization occurs approximately once per hour, so changes you see in Yellowdig may not immediately appear in Canvas.

Troubleshooting - Yellowdig: Troubleshoot Access from Your Course

  • If things like @mentions and #hashtags aren't working:
    • @mentions and #hashtags do not work if they have been copied from another text editor into Yellowdig (this is in place to prevent formatting issues when pasting code and formulas). Please make sure you are typing these symbols directly in YD.
    • Most email notifications are set to off by default for privacy reasons. If you’re not receiving @mentions, please check your notification settings.
  • If clicking the Yellowdig link in Canvas only shows the Yellowdig homepage:
    • Disable browser extensions such as AdBlock Plus and Ghostery.
    • Allow access to 3rd Party Cookies in your browser
    • If issues persist after taking the above steps, please contact support@yellowdig.com .
  • If you see "Grading Not Configured" in the Canvas gradebook:
    • Please make sure that you have launched Yellowdig from a named assignment link in the course. Each learner must start with an assignment to establish their individual grade passback.  If you cannot find the assignment link, ask your fellow students in Yellowdig whether they were able to find it.  If they cannot, the instructor may need to set up an assignment or may have other instructions.
    • If issues persist after clicking on a named assignment, please contact support@yellowdig.com .
  • If you cannot see your grade in the Canvas gradebook:
    • Please note that the grade sync from Yellowdig to the Canvas gradebooks are not immediate and the exact timing will vary. It may take up to 12 hours for a grade earned in Yellowdig to appear in the gradebook.
