What is Yellowdig?
“A 200 Word Introduction to Yellowdig”
(from the
Yellowdig support site)
Yellowdig is a discussion platform that connects learners and empowers educators. Yellowdig boards create a private network where learning communities can be established, allowing discussion and sharing to foster the relationships, skills, and knowledge that allow people to thrive.
As information is increasingly digitized and widely available, reading textbooks and memorizing facts is no longer the primary way to drive learning. And collaborative interactions with professors and peers are an increasingly valuable part of the learning experience. Yellowdig provides an easy means for learners and other users to communicate and collaborate about class content and share a broad array of timely and relevant learning resources from the wider world (e.g., videos, news articles, blogs and more).
The beauty of Yellowdig for this purpose is in its simplicity. It uses conventions from social media, which the majority of learners are very familiar with and enjoy. This simple design, combined with gamification and the feedback that the platform provides, helps students and instructors quickly and easily build collaborative learning communities.
With Yellowdig, learning is not limited to class time or face-to-face interactions and becomes a shared goal of the entire learning community (i.e., your classes, departments, etc.). Community members can learn from each other, anytime, anywhere, from any device.

Posting: Pinning and Commenting
Think of Yellowdig as a giant corkboard! Posting in Yellowdig boards is done in one of two formats: you can
pin something (make your own post) or you can
comment on something that someone else has pinned.

Grading: Points and Participation
Yellowdig has a few quirks when it comes to grades! You can
check your grades in Canvas or you can
check them in Yellowdig. Checking your points in Yellowdig is not only faster, it also shows you a lot of other metrics!
Some other things to note:
- The grade sync from Yellowdig to Canvas is not instant! It may take up to 12 hours to appear in the gradebook.
- If you are getting "Grading Not Configured" error, please make sure that you have launched Yellowdig from a named assignment link in the course. Every individual learner must launch from an assignment to establish their individual grade passback. If you cannot find the assignment link, ask your fellow students in Yellowdig whether they were able to find it. If they cannot, the instructor may need to set up an assignment or may have other instructions.
Troubleshooting
- If things like @mentions and #hashtags aren't working:
- @mentions #hashtags do not work if they have been copied from another text editor into Yellowdig (this is in place to prevent formatting issues with code and formulas being pasted). Please make sure you are typing these symbols within YD itself.
- Most email notifications are set to off by default for privacy reasons. If you’re not being notified via @mentions, please check your notification settings.
- If clicking the Yellowdig link in Canvas only shows the Yellowdig homepage:
- Disable browser extensions such as adblocker plus and ghostery.
- Allow access to 3rd Party Cookies in your browser
- If issues persist after taking the above steps, please contact support@yellowdig.com .
