How to Download and Access IBM SPSS 27 and 28
SPSS Statistics is a software package used for interactive, or batched, statistical analysis. The first step to access SPSS is to find the program on the ASU MyApps site:
- Go to https://myapps.asu.edu
- Type SPSS into the keyword box.
- Click on the SPSS app.
Once you find SPSS in MyApps, you have two options for accessing SPSS. You can either run it virtually through Citrix (i.e., use it through the web) or download it locally (i.e., install it directly onto your computer).
Option 1: Run the App Virtually
If you do not want to download SPSS, but you wish to run it through the website instead, you can click “Run App”. You will be asked to run the Citrix program in order to open SPSS. For instructions, see: "How to Run SPSS Virtually through Citrix".
Option 2: Download the App
If you want to download/install SPSS on your local computer, then you need to scroll down the page ( https://myapps.asu.edu/app/ibm-spss ) and select the “SPSS # Installer” appropriate to your computer. This will download a large (1.3 GB) zip file to your computer. Due to the size of the zip package/installer, it may take some time for the download to finish.
Once the zip file is downloaded, open the zip file. Click on the single folder within the zip file and Extract the contents to your computer (I typically extract such files to my desktop).
Open the extracted file and double-click the setup file (something like SPSS_Statistics_28_win64).
Wait for the “Preparing to Install” window to appear.
You will be told that these are Licensed Materials – click Next.
Click “I accept the terms in the license agreement” and click Next.
[if asked - You can click “No” to “Install IBM SPSS Statistics – essentials for Python”]
[if asked - Choose a destination folder (typically, you should simply use the default option) and click Next.]
Click Install when it is ready to install the program.
A window will appear indicating “InstallShield Wizard Completed”. BEFORE clicking finish, make sure the box is checked to “start SPSS statistics license authorization wizard now.”
You can now authorize the product. Make sure to select the option for “Authorized user license (I purchased a single copy of the product)”. Click Next.
Enter the appropriate license code provided to you. Click Next.
- SPSS 29: e566881640c834a7888e
- SPSS 28: ca758122d1202421a8e4
- SPSS 27: d1264b70a943b70c797b
Once the transaction ends, click Next, then Finish.
SPSS is now on your computer! Having a hard time finding it? You can search your computer for IBM or SPSS. Select the full program (IBM SPSS Statistics #), not the zip folder or license wizard option that may come up in the search.
Test it out! You can use this sample data to practice opening SPSS. If you click this link, you will be prompted to download the file. The first step is to simply save this file to your computer (where you can find it again). In some cases, simply opening the file directly will open SPSS.
In other cases, you need to open SPSS BEFORE opening the data. To do this, save the data to your computer, then open SPSS (not the data file). Feel free to close out the initial window that appears (with options to open the most recent file, etc.). Then, in the main SPSS window, go to File → Open → Data and browse to the data file saved on your computer. It should bring some numbers into your data file, which means you now have SPSS and you can open data files with it.
